Sidnie spotted in New Jersey!

While recently in the USA I spotted a copy of Sidnie meets Uncle Sam at the Franklin Township Library in New Jersey in the latest books section! It was great to see Sidnie travelling back to where some of his memories were made.

A good reminder that the book is available for US readers :)

Woman’s Day Article

Karen appeared in the 29 August 2022 edition of "Woman's Day" with some helpful advice for anyone who has had to say goodbye to their pet.

SAYING GOODBYE TO YOUR PET
It’s important to seek support if you need it

‘For most of us, our pets are part of the family. So when the time comes to say goodbye, the grief can be very real.

Author Karen Waldman says the heartbreak felt unbearable after her beloved cocker spaniel Sidnie passed away. “The period of grief I felt losing Sidnie was profound,” she says. “I cried for months and months and felt a part of my life had been ripped from me.” Here are some approaches that can help during this time…

  • Don’t be afraid to seek out professional help. Karen was so distraught she called Lifeline, or alternatively you could see a counsellor.

  • Pet cremation services often provide counselling as part of their package.

  • Join chat or Facebook groups for grieving pet parents.

  • Surround yourself with friends and family who understand your loss.

  • Keep your pet’s urn and ashes at home for comfort.

  • Write a letter, a poem or short story, or keep a journal to help get your feelings out.

And what about the age-old question: should you get a new pet? Some people feel the pain is too much to bear, again – or they just can’t replace their old pet. Should you get a new pet, the time frame is individual with no right answer. You will love your new fur baby and the love for one doesn’t diminish the love for the other.’

The Canberra Bookshelf

July 18, 2022

I am proud and excited that my book has been featured in Barbie Robinson's monthly The Riot Act column, The Canberra Bookshelf.

‘The author shows remarkable restraint in her commentary, aided perhaps by having a dog’s eye view of life. There’s humour, wit and compassion here and a salutary lesson for us all in tolerance and finding joy in all things.’

Karen Waldman’s smart, funny and insightful work with Sidnie the English Cocker Spaniel in the driving seat.’

My lovely chat with Barbie from Living Arts Canberra is now available online an interview and podcast. She has also posted a review of the book. Thank you Barbie for your kind words.

This book will strike a chord with dog owners and lovers … it also holds its own as memoir – Karen’s prose is fluid, entertaining and clear. It’s a pleasure to read.’

Yass Valley Times

May 10, 2022

As a part-time Yass local, it was a delight to be interviewed by Brianna O’Rourke for the Yass Valley Times.

As Brianna highlights, the chapter, ‘An Aussie Horse Farm’, is set entirely in Yass. It paints a picture of what many dogs enjoy doing in the Australian countryside – sniffing at horses and kangaroos and barking at that very odd-looking creature, the echidna.

Interview with AJ Collins

Editor and author, AJ Collins, interviewed me for her ‘Let’s Launch’ blog. We covered topics big and small, from the fear of being a first-time writer, to the themes of the book, my process as a writer and what I might do differently next time. She even had me divulge a little-known secret that many of you might not know about me.
